Binaural Beats are sounds that are synthesised, inside the brain, when signals at different frequencies are played, one into each ear. The effect of these sounds is called Brainwave Entrainment, whereby the users' thought patterns will start to synchronise to the frequency of the binaural beat, allowing the user to enter different mind states, such as focussed, relaxed or highly creative. The theory behind them is simple. Take a 400Hz sound and play it into your left ear. Then take a 410Hz sound and play it in your right ear. Separate hemispheres of the brain will process these two sounds, and a third sound, the binaural beat, will be heard oscillating at 10Hz. (The difference between the two sounds). The brain will synchronise to this frequency, resulting in an altered mind state. As the frequencies get higher, the brain can become highly alert and focussed. As the frequencies become lower, the brain can enter relaxing and deeply meditative states. Brainwave frequency ranges are shown below:
So, just by listening to an MP3 file, you can tune your mind in to a desired mental state! OK, prove it!Well, the proof is easy. Remember Binaural Beats are heard in the brain. So, try this experiment.
1. After you have registered and downloaded your free MP3 file, plug in your headphones and start the playback. A good file for this is the Power Sleep, as the frequencies will rapidly decend, but you can use any track.
2. Close your eyes and listen for, say, 30 seconds. Set the volume to be louder than normal, as you want to discern the different tones. Note what you hear... a decending tone. 3. Take your right headphone out, you should still hear a tone, but something is now missing. 4. Put the headphone back in, something has just been added. 5. Repeat, removing the headphone from the other ear. 6. Experiment with adding and removing the audio from your left and right ear. Reset the playback as if becomes more difficult once the frequencies go low for the sleep. You should notice that when both headphones are in, there is an obvious tone that you only hear when both headphones are in. This is the Binaural Frequency that your brain will synchronise to. 7. After all this hard work, how about a quick rest? Set the volume to a low, non intrusive level, start playback from the beginning, relax, and let the power sleep do it's work. Easy isnt it? Your mind is synthesising a new, virtual tone in your head. Binaural Beats are incredibly powerful and there are lots of resources here and on the web.
